Reader Stories: Life With Arabian Horses

Your Horse's Name, Age and Bloodline

Hot Night In Rio, (Sidney) 11 year old National Show Horse, out of Blaze of Glory and Flame of Hope is just a pleasure to ride. I had bought her for my son several years ago, but I kinda adopted her for myself. She is bright and always aware of her surroundings, like all Arabians, but she has a courageous heart. She carries herself with pride and determination. I am primarily a trail horse rider and she always provides me with wonderful and enjoyable rides.

How Long Have You Owned & Where Did You Get Your Horse?

I purchased my NSH 4 years ago in West Virginia. I bought her for my son. We were looking for a horse for him to get on immediately and ride. We found a horse advertised in our State Agricultural Magazine. My son and I traveled to the southern part of West Virginia to look at the horse. However, when we visited the owners farm, the owner showed us the horse and then showed us a National Show Horse which is half Arabian and half Saddlebred. I never knew such a breed was out there, but my son fell in love with her. So, I bought her instead of the horse we were originally looking for. I am sooo glad we did, because she turned out to be just a wonderful riding horse.

Advice

  • My NSH is intelligent and determined. You have to let her know that you are in control, if not, they want to be the leader. Once you let them know who is boss, a really good relationship is easily formed.

What Is the Best Characteristic of Arabians?

Stamina and natural beauty.

Is There a Challenging Aspect of Owning This Breed?

Yes, they can be head-strong, but that is in their makeup. I did not find this a problem when she found that I was the leader which I did through proper humane training.

Do You find This Breed Requires Any Special Care?

My NSH has a tendency to get rain-rot. However, through aggressive attention to the problem, it has not been a problem the last two years.

In a nutshell my horse is...

a good friend that provides me with hours of great riding and companionship.
