Definition: Banding is often seen on Western show horses. Banding keeps the mane neat and lying flat. The mane is shortened and thinned to about 3 1/2 inches( 9 cm) long. It is then gathered into small bundles about 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) wide and each bundle is secured with an elastic or thread very close to the neck that either matches the mane or compliments the gear the horse and rider will be wearing.
