In What Areas of the Country is EPM Prevalent?

Answer: It's estimated that 50% of horses in the US have been exposed to the protozoa responsible for EPM symptoms. The range of opossums mirrors the areas where EPM is prevalent. Generally, opossums do not live in the mid-western states, Rocky Mountains, and northern most areas of United States. However, milder winters and accidental transport (on produce trucks etc…) has brought the opossum to more northerly areas. Twenty years ago, opossums did not live in my area. Over the late few years however, opossums are not an uncommon sight.
