How much does it Cost to Buy a Pony?

By , About.com Guide

Question: How much does it Cost to Buy a Pony?
Ponies might be smaller in stature than horses, but that doesn't mean their purchase or upkeep costs are proportionally smaller.
Answer: The cost of a good pony can be the same or higher than a horse. Expect prices for suitable first ponies to be about $1000 and upwards.

The intitial price is only the beginning. The only savings you might encounter with a pony are feed costs. You'll still need to buy good quality hay, but you won't need quite as much. You won't find any savings in board, veterinarian, farrier, and dental care.
