There are more rescue and adoption organizations than ever, and even the general public has become more aware of the problem of unwanted horses. Some people blame the economy. Horses  became to expensive for many folks to are to keep. Other's blame an excess of horses on the lack of slaughter facilities. Whether you agree or not, if you're like many horse lovers, your heart aches to give an unwanted horse a good home. But, is a rescue horse a good option for the first time rider or owner?

In Buying a Rescue Horse I discuss some of the issues you may have to deal with if you buy or adopt a horse from a rescue or adoption organization. As most horse owners know, the initial cost of a horse is only the beginning and any horse (not just rescues) that have physical or training issues can quickly dig into an owner's wallet.

My first pony was a rescue, the barn I worked at rescued him and then a few years later I got him. He was great and wanted to be around people so much and make them happy. I’ve worked with a lot of rescues and I’ve found often it depends on what they where rescued FROM. A horse rescued from no food etc or a horse rescued from abuse.

Good article.

There are so many things you do have to consider. It’s not just because you have compassion for these horses. I have been known to rescue stray dog and cats, but a horse is totally different. You do not know what excess baggage they come with and they are so huge. But it sure would be nice to help in some way.
