Adding to my collection of articles on things that make you and your horses itch is a profile of lice on horses. Lice are most often associated with poor living conditions, no matter what species they infest. However, as many parents of school aged children know that isn't always the case. Lice really don't care where they live, whether it's a mansion or shack, high class show stable or backyard run-in. Horses in poor condition are more likely to get lice. But there is always an exception to that rule!
I once brought home a horse I suspected of having lice and started treatment immediately. Thankfully, none of the nasty little critters transferred to the home herd and not a louse or nit was seen from then on. I admit though, that treating my horse with a toxic powder was almost as revolting as the parasites themselves. But when you have horses, those are the sort of things you sometimes have to face up to.
