Suspected Horse Killer Caught
Miami area horse owners may be breathing a bit easier after the arrest of an 18 year old who was trying to steal two horses. The Miami Herald reports the youth was equipped with garbage bars, ropes, tools and a butcher knife and had asked a neighbor to help him out, not knowing the neighbor was wired by police. According to an NBCMiami article, the young man admitted to killing one horse, and authorities are investigating the possibility that he was part of a larger horse killing ring. About 20 horse have been found butchered in their own stables and pastures since January. The most recent killing was September 9, 2009. While one arrest has been made, the Miami-Dade police Agricultural Patrol is cautioning horse owners to continue to be vigilant, and to secure barns, homes and pastures with lighting, locks and video surveillance cameras.

The unfortunate reality here is that this 18 yr old horse killer is not going to get the jail time or punishment he deserves. Its not like murdering a human, thats how most people see it, its just an animal. Because of that aspect, this kid will be out and up to his disgusting ways in no time.
I just don’t understand the cruelty ….why were they killing the horses. I agree…they won’t get the punishment they deserve.
he needs to be given a sentence to work with disabled children in a horse riding program where he has to work all aspects of the program for at least two years.
Sentence him to life without parole. The guy is a future serial killer (human) in the making.
The article uses the words “butcher-ed” which seems to imply that this was being done for food. Just because it was not cattle does not make this any less sick and disturbing, although I’m sure a lot of the sentiment would be different if we were commenting on goats or hogs or chickens. There are people would would just as soon see “us” hang and roast in that hot place for eating anything that used to be alive – so don’t get too high-horsey yet. I’ll wager there’s a lot more to this “story” that is not being revealed by police and/or media.
He needs to be hung on Main street of town,; charge for ticket, and give money collected to Horse Rescue. This person will go from animals, to people in a short time. Do WE need that kind of person on our streets, and in our society in general? I should think not. Hang him 30 days net! PERIOD!
I feel really bad for the victims of this crime. I hope that the authorities catch the rest of these people who obviously have no respect for peoples pets. If this had happened to me I would want to kill the persons responsible for killing my babies without a second thought.

Here’s my take on punishment; you are welcome to take it or leave it.
1 – The ADA should see if there re still horse rustling laws on the books that will apply. Many laws have been left in their original state because no one ever thought to amend them. I’m sure in some states, rustling is still punishable by hanging or firing squad.
2 – If this is a property crime, because horses are considered property, how much is the horse worth? This may be grand theft.
3 – Animal cruelty laws should apply. The horse owners need to ask the ASPCA, HSUS and other orgs to lend their voices to this crime.
4 – If all that fails, offer to let this boy do his time as a rodeo clown.
5 – IF that won’t fly, perhaps teaching him the perils of dragging are in order. No helmet, of course.
I have to laugh at the suggestion that he be made to do community service at hippotherapy clinic. You gotta be kidding me! Differently abled people who have enough on their plate should not be made to deal with this creature who would harm animals. And the animals certainly don’t deserve it. I can say this. If he ever got NEAR my horses, I’d rip his silly 18-year-old head off his neck!
If your stable or the boarders haven’t done so already, hire security guards to patrol the stable grounds at night, install security cameras, and arrange a “community watch”. Not only are horses at risk, but so are people. Be alert.
One more comment that may not be politically correct, but too bad.
Read the article. I’m making an inferential leap here, but I’m guessing that the man involved didn’t know he committed multiple FELONIES (he’s doing time) because he never learned the Laws of the United States, Florida or the county in which he committed the felonies.
I’m guessing this person is here illegally. Stiffer immigration laws and standards may have prevented this from occuring.

I cannot believe anyone could be so heartless. What could be the reasoning behind such cruel actions. I wish the horse had kicked … him. I hope he is severly punished.
Rather than wasting a rope to hang him, give im to the people whose horses he butchered and let them do to him what he did to the horses, an eye for an eye.
