Do Your Education and Career Plans Include Horses?

Friday August 29, 2008
Several young people I know are gearing up to head out to college or university. I have to admit, I am a bit envious. The range of educational and employment opportunities in the horse industry has burgeoned since I was making those important career decisions. Some of my young friends are studying at home through courses like The Equine Science Certificate while others are off to learn how to be vet techs, and veterinarians. Some are even taking their horses with them!

Are horses part of your career plans?

I am currently enrolled in a post-secondary course and plan to be employed in the horse industry.

I am employed in the horse industry and have taken courses and training.
I work in the horse industry, but have taken no post-secondary courses.
My dream is to work in the horse industry sometime in the future.

All of your questions are slanted towards the people who do intend to follow a career of some sort within the horse industry… or those who would like to. However, I’m sure that there are plenty of people who simply enjoy learning or seeing what has changed.

I got stuck in the middle of a bitter argument about this exact topic last night, between a daughter and her mother. The mother wants her to go right through school, and the daughter wants to finished after her School Certificate (Year 10) and continue on with what she loves, horses. There’s more about it on my blog, if anyone’s interested. I say if you love horses and want to work with them, there are no excuses for not finding a way to work them into your job. None. Money? While some horse industry jobs pay low wages, there are plenty that pay perfectly respectable wages. So I don’t see what’s stopping this 55% who say they’ve always dreamt of working with horses…you only get one life, do with it what you love.
