Join the Discussion: Keeping Horses with Cattle

Tuesday February 26, 2008
A few years ago I got a phone call from a friend: "Somebody came and chopped off my horse's tail!".

She had looked for footprints and tire tracks to try to figure out how somebody had got past the house, into the pasture and stolen her horse's tail. It wasn't until a few days later that I remembered that she had her horse pastured with a few young steers. There were no tire tracks because it was likely that one of the cattle had chewed the tail off! I've known this to happen with several horses kept with cattle. Some horses can live quite companionably with cattle. Some horses will terrorize cattle.

On the forum, one reader asks about keeping cattle with horses because she was told horses will sometimes kill calves. Is this the truth? Forum members are sharing a wide range of experiences of keeping horses with cattle.
