Thunder - From Giraffe to Beauty

Thunder after his recovery!

Describe your horse when you first got it.

Thunder was a 4 and a half year old Tennessee Walker. When we arrived that night and he was brought out of the barn, my first thought was "is this a giraffe?" he was knock-kneed, and his hooves were the size of dinner plates. The worst thing was he was several hundred pounds under weight.

Describe your horse now.

Thunder is now 6 years old and a real beauty and the sweetest boy! Thankfully he never let the neglect of his previous owners sour his sweetness. He lives with his best buddy, Red, a 10 year old Quarter Horse who was also rescued from a neglectful owner.

About my rescued horse

Thunder was so hungry when he came here! But we had to slowly put the weight on him. Also it took many months for his feet to get in shape.

How I Did It:

Thunder has gained 350 pounds since he has come to live with us. Good old fashioned pasture and quality hay, along with small amounts of feed and rice bran helped him put his weight on. He has not had any ill effects from his malnutrition.

Advice

  • Thunder and Red were the first horses that we have owned, and they were both rescues and needed a lot of work. But it was so worth it! They truly appreciate a good home and we love them!

Katherine Blocksdorf, Horses Guide, says:

Besides weight issues, overgrown hooves are probably the most common problem a rescue horse may have. It may take many months of working with a competent farrier to bring them into shape. Even then, it may take a long time for the hoof to grow out so that it is healthy and strong. Thunder and Red are so lucky to have found someone willing to put the time and effort into bringing them to good health.
