Reader Stories: Life With Arabian Horses

From Betty Faust

Your Horse's Name, Age and Bloodline

My horse's name is K Fira Supreme, I call her Fiera , she is 18. yrs. old, she is of Egyptian bloodline.

How Long Have You Owned & Where Did You Get Your Horse?

I have had her for 7 yrs she was in foal when I bought her from a friend, here in Gainesville, Florida. She had a beautiful foal on Easter Sunday , a filly that we named Lillie. Fiera was a great Mama I've never seen such an attentive mother, it was a learning experience for my husband & I , we had horse experience but only with adult horses, we learned a lot about foals and all the training needed the first two years, it was challenging but worth it.I never realized how hard horse trainers work, just the ground training alone, it has to be daily, consistently done, I would come home from work and make sure I groomed her , picked her feet( picking her back feet, oh boy it took about 6 months solid for her to stop kicking out , but she finally became well-behaved ). She is 6 yrs old now , a beautiful chestnut color, gorgeous floating trot, doing well with her riding , we are fine tuning, trying some dressage, she is very smart, learns quickly.

Advice

  • Pros - Very intelligent, they crave attention( almost like a human being) , if they get attention & love they will bond with you in a special way. Make sure you are going to have the time to spend with them. Also they will follow you ( be careful I walked into our barn when I first got Fiera and she followed me into the barn, it was a small doorway, I hear her hoof steps behind me and I'm like Oh my God, this was a small tack room and she was huge in foal, I had to slowly turn her around and lead her out. Now we have a barrier in front of the door.
  • Cons- some arabs can be very high-strung, they need to be worked.

What Is the Best Characteristic of Arabians?

They are very sensitive, if you work with them consistently and are patient when training they will be your best friend.

Is There a Challenging Aspect of Owning This Breed?

Depending on their temperament, some are laid back while others are high energy. High energy types need a lot of exercise , make sure you have a round pen and work in there , give them challenging work and they will do fine.

Do You find This Breed Requires Any Special Care?

Not really.

In a nutshell my horse is...

Beautiful, intelligent, watching her gallop in our pastures with her daughter is a joy, never get tired of seeing that!!!
