Reader Stories: Life With Arabian Horses

From Kaitlin

Your Horse's Name, Age and Bloodline

Jimmi Khalil is my horse's name. He is a 13 yr. old Half-Arabian gelding. His sire was a full blooded, and registered Arabian. His dam was a quarter horse.

How Long Have You Owned & Where Did You Get Your Horse?

When I first bought him it was a challenge training him. He proved to be very smart and sensitive. I was only fourteen at the time, but my trainer felt I was ready for an advanced horse. I was his first rider in years. When I first started with him he tested me to see if I was a substantial leader. He was head of his heard and very smart and fast. He is beautifully proportioned and the whitest horse and the farm. I am eighteen now and he has been a great friend since I have been training him.

Advice

  • Be prepared to move and think fast. Arabians are very sensitive and intelligent. Be patient and match his/ her energy when training and riding. They love to work and "play" with their rider. These horses tend to bond well with their trainer/rider, particularly to one person.

What Is the Best Characteristic of Arabians?

When trained properly these horses are the best partners to have. There sensitivity and intelligence makes them quick to respond to ques. It does not take a lot to get these horses moving!

Is There a Challenging Aspect of Owning This Breed?

People should be paired with a horse according to their personalities. Someone easy going who wants few problems with their horse should reconsider getting an Arabian unless they have had lots of training time.

Do You find This Breed Requires Any Special Care?

These horses have a lot of energy, but when that energy is directed properly, these horses can be so much fun to work with. They also love lots of personal attention and require lots of love and care. They also need to be kept busy and interested. Try Parelli games to keep things fun for you both.

In a nutshell my horse is...

Fun and energetic! He loves to get scratched and to get treats, but above all he loves personnel attention. He used to get jealous easy (with other people or horses). He has such a short attention span! But he runs to me at the gate when he hears me calling, and always tries his best for me.
