Side Saddle

An antique side saddle with elaborate quilting details.

2005 K. Blocksdorf
Definition: This is an antique sidesaddle. The flat seat and pronounced pommels allow the rider to sit almost sideways. The rider sits facing forward with the right leg hooked over the head, and the left leg sits in the normal position with the foot in a stirrup. This saddle has no "leaping horn" or head. The leaping head allows the rider to balance against the head and provides a more secure seat while jumping.
