The withers can be very prominent on some horses and almost flat on others.

Definition: The withers are at the top of the shoulder where the neck joins the body. The ‘lump’ seen on many horses is the top of the spiny process of the tallest thoracic vertebrae. This part of the vertebrae is quite high on some horses and shallow on others.
Common Misspellings: whithers, wither
Examples:
It can be uncomfortable to ride a horse with high withers without a saddle.
