#4: The barrel is largely enclosed by the ribs.

Definition: The curve of the barrel is formed by the ribs. Within the area of the barrel are the, stomach and intestines. The heart and lungs fill the area from the chest to just behind the withers.
Examples:
The broodmare had a very wide sprung barrel.
