Definition: A rug is a thick blanket that horses wear in cold weather. Traditionally, they are made of lined canvas, but modern rugs are also made with a synthetic material. Rugs are usually worn outdoors and may be waterproofed. There are usually two buckles that close the rug at the horse's chest, one or two belly straps and leg straps that prevent the rug from sliding sideways.
Older rugs may not have leg straps but cord called 'filet strings' meant to help keep the blanket from shifting. However, newer rugs take full advantage of more durable, waterproof and breathable fabrics, warmer linings and better design. They can also be considerably lighter in weight, without sacrificing warmth.
