Young Rider programs are for youth equestrians between the ages of fourteen and twenty one and were developed to encourage a high level of equestrian skills and team work. The program encourages youth riders to maintain a life-long enthusiasm for equestrianism, while many will continue on to Grand Prix level competition. Young Rider programs offers educational opportunities such as clinics and camps. The North American Junior and Young Rider Championship is a competition that attracts youth riders from Bermuda, Canada, Caribbean Island, Mexico, Puerto Rico and United States in show jumping, dressage, eventing and reining.

Young Rider programs are offered by associations such as the United States Dressage Federation and the United States Eventing Association and hold competitions specifically for those in their programs. For example the North American Young Riders Endurance Ride (NAYRER) is a competition for youth who compete in the sport of endurance riding.
