Environmentally Safe Stable Care

Tips for Going Green in Your Horse's Stable

By , About.com Guide

Here are ideas for going green in your stable or barn. Scroll to the bottom of the page to add your environmentally friendly stable care tips.

  • Consider having the interior of your stable whitewashed or painted to brighten it up and reflect natural and artificial lighting.

  • Rubber mats in stalls not only benefit your horse's legs, but you won't need to put as much bedding down. More turn out time means less bedding is used too.

  • Replace lighting with energy efficient bulbs. Be sure they are made for outdoor/barn use.

  • Keep a recycle bin in the barn so anyone in the barn is encouraged to put drink, snack or other packaging that is recyclable into the bin and not the garbage.

  • Only use lights that you need in your barn and arena. Put lights on timers or motion sensors if necessary.

  • Explore alternative bedding material like recycled paper and wood pellets.

  • Avoid packaging by buying shavings, feeds and supplements in bulk if you have a way to store large quantities.
