Clinches

The clinches are the ends of the nails, bent down and folded over. They help to hold the shoe on.

Definition: The end of the nail used to tack on shoes, nipped close to the hoof and bent over is called a clinch. The clinches prevent the nail from slipping through the hoof.

Examples:
The farrier filed the clinches off so the shoe could be pulled off easily.
