What are the best feeds for helping a horse lose weight?

By Katherine Blocksdorf, About.com

Question: What are the best feeds for helping a horse lose weight?

Answer: All horses need good quality pasture or hay. But some horses are ‘easy keepers’ and seem to put weight on just by looking at a bale of hay. You’ll need to restrict your horse’s access to the food. Put them in a grassless pasture where you can control exactly how much hay they eat or arrange turn out on a round bale or pasture for short periods of time several times a day.

A horse needs to keep some small amount of food in its system so don’t starve your horse for long periods of time. Sparse pasture might be available where your horse has to work harder to nibble grass. A horse like this will only need a salt block, perhaps with minerals and no concentrates or grains. Always provide fresh clean water.
