Why do Horses Weave?

By , About.com Guide

Question: Why do Horses Weave?
Answer: Horses that are nervous and/or bored can develop habits like weaving. The most frequent causes are lack of exercise, keeping the horse stabled for prolonged periods of time, and separation anxiety. It is possible that there is a genetic tendency towards weaving, so it is possible that a foal might learn to weave from its mother. Horses used for high performance sports such as upper-level dressage, racing, or endurance riding show more tendencies to weave and stall walk. Pent up energy and anxiety may be possible causes.
