Are there natural methods of deworming?

By , About.com Guide

Question: Are there natural methods of deworming?
Answer: Some owners don't like the idea of using chemical parasite control. There are herbal preparations on the market and products containing diatomaceous earth-fine particles of fossilized diatoms, purported to nick the outer coating of parasites so they die. Many owners report satisfactory results with these natural de-worming preparations. However the use of many natural methods is controversial and many natural preparations are not subject to the rigorous testing that most chemical de-wormers are.

Diatomaceous should not be inhaled by you or your horse because the sharp dust can irritate mucous membranes.

One of the most damaging parasites are encysted strongyles and they may be difficult to get rid of with anything but a specific drug based de-wormer.
