Guide Review - Absorbine UltraShield Fly Bonnet

We’ve purchased several different types of fly masks over the years and this one remains our favorite. We like that they are lightweight, the mesh is fine and easy to see through and may provide some sun protection. Cleaning them is easy. They are machine washable, although we frequently just give them a quick dunk in the wash tub and hang them to dry. Despite the mesh being finer than is often found on fly masks we’ve never had one rip. The hook and loop fastener makes for easy adjust-ability, but provides quick release should the horse catch the bonnet on something. Our only concern is that the black color may be more heat absorbing than a lighter color. We’d love to see the same design in a lighter grey perhaps.

Like most fly masks and bonnets this one is made for stable and pasture use only. A horse or pony wearing a fly bonnet may have reduced vision. Therefore, take the bonnet or mask off before riding or driving. For the horse’s own safety masks and bonnets should be removed in low light conditions or rain.

I have found that this fly mask does not keep the flies out on small headed horses even in the smallest size. Seems to work fine on the horses that have a reg size head
