What type of food does a horse need?

By Katherine Blocksdorf, About.com

Question: What type of food does a horse need?
All members of the equine family have evolved to efficiently digest grass. But in many cases grass isn't enough for proper nutrition.
Answer:

Although good pasture grass should be sufficient, it often is not due to over grazing, snow cover, drought or poor soil conditions. Most horses will need supplemental feeding of fodder and concentrates, such as hay and commercially produced grain mixtures as well as salt and minerals. Fresh clean water should always be available.

It is easy to over feed ponies, donkeys, hinnys and mules and some will require restricted access to fodder.
