Gallop to Learn About Horses' Leads
cross country jumping

Any time a horse is cantering, loping or gallopin, being on the correct lead is important. This cross country jumper covers the ground on its right lead, that is the right foreleg reaches out further than the left.

Another way to learn about leads is with your own two legs. Gallop around the back yard, or carefully through the house (don’t trip on the furniture and draw the curtains if you’re afraid someone will see). Notice how your body and balance change when you change leads, galloping with one leg leading out front, and then changing to the other. How well schooled are you? Can you do a flying change?

Think about what you’ve seen, and you’ll be able to understand a horse’s leads better. Take a good look at the picture above. Can you tell what leads everyone is on?
