This picture shows riders on the steeplechase course at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, Sweden. Roads and tracks and steeplechase were part of the three day eventing. But the format was shortened and now the three day event includes jumping, cross country and dressage. All phases of eventing have military roots. Dressage tests the control and obedience of a horse, eventing tests endurance, courage and athleticism, and show jumping tests obedience, agility and fitness.
