Hot Forum Discussions: My Mare is Afraid of Her Blanket
Wednesday January 30, 2008
"I just bought a 6 y/o Palomino Mare. I drove to see her, rode her, and had her delivered. She is super sweet and wants to do the right thing. Because of the climate change ( warm to very cold), I put a blanket on her. She stood her the blanket, but then wouldn't walk out, she acted as though her back feet were tied. The next morning, the blanket was off. I didn't see it come off, but I'm sure it wasn't pretty. She is afraid of everything. I tried today to saddle her and she sets way back and shies from the saddle blanket. She literally shakes while holding her with halter and lead rope. I was told she was a little nervous, but right now she is very scared of everything. Any suggestions? Thank you." Aliha

It sounds like your mare didn’t know what to do so she just froze like a statue. This is a classic “Feet Stuck” situation.
She was removed from familiar surroundings and is very unsure at the moment. I would recommend groundwork to help her. Sacking her out would be another suggestion, please make sure you have adequate instruction in these areas or contact someone familiar in sacking out or spook-proofing your horse to help you.
She sounds like a great mare, just needs a little time and maybe some instruction.
Good Luck and Great Riding!
