Posture and Horseback Riding

Saturday September 15, 2007
One of the things I struggle with when I ride is my posture. I tend to slouch, not only when I am riding, but at my computer, over the sink washing dishes--everywhere really. It's a long ingrained habit and I have a number of excuses--I'm tall, I used to be shy, and I have hurt my back. Apparently these are three of the Top Seven Causes of Poor Posture. So when I hear a riding instructor tell me 'sit tall!' doing so makes me feel strange--like I am leaning backwards. Last week my instructor told me "you have to straighten up". I tried my best, but how do you make a 45 year old body break a long standing habit? My first step: exercise. How To Establish Core Support From Anne Asher, About Guide to Back & Neck Pain looks like a good starting point.
