Colic Scare

Monday February 19, 2007
My mare gave me a bit of a scare this weekend. I rode briefly (it was very cold) in the morning and then left for a Pony Club meeting with my daughter. When we returned there was a message from my mother. Fredina had been rolling, looking listless and had broke a sweat--all the classic symptoms of colic. She hspent a good part of her afternoon walking her and had called the vet. After examing her the vet felt it was nothing serious. By the time I got there Fredina was standing happily in her stall, wearing a fresh dry blanket and filling her face with hay. If it weren't for the vet bill, you'd never know anything had happened. Of course we spent some time trying to figure out why it had happened. Was it a slight impaction, a belly full of cold water or gas pains? That's the scary thing about colic--sometimes you just don't know why it happens and all you can do is make sure you've provided the best basic care--including good feed, fresh water, regular deworming and dental care.
