A History of Barbed Wire

Thursday October 5, 2006
I was in the local farmer’s co-op recently and noticed rolls of barbed wire for sale. It’s still used on cattle farms occasionally and when you are out riding it isn’t unusual to come upon old rusty barbed wire fence lines lying on the ground. It was common practice to use barbed wire to fence in livestock. Barbed wire isn’t a good choice for horse fencing. Because the thin wire is difficult to see and doesn’t present a solid barrier horses can become entangled and badly injured. Barb wire has quite a history however, and at one time, was the answer to big fencing problems. Jacci Howard Bear, Your Guide to Austin, TX has written several articles about the history of barbed wire.
