Sitting Correctly in the Saddle
Monday September 11, 2006
My daughter and I spent the weekend at a Pony Club camp. We camped in rainy and then freezing weather, went on a trail ride, had a lesson and played gymkhana games. I am always excited to introduce people to horseback riding, so it was fun when one of the non-riding moms took up my offer of getting up on my horse. She got a mini-lesson and of course the first thing she learned was Sitting Correctly in the Saddle. "Wow," she said, "I can't believe my daughter does this!" I suspect she may be booking her first riding lesson soon. (I handed my camera to my young friend Leslie to catch me riding in a 'down and back' game.)

I’m glad to hear somebody else went to horse camp w/their daughter, Ours was for a week & we slept in the horse trailer. I was the only mom. Everybody else was 10-16. Weather was good for most of it but it was a lot of work. Breakfast at 8, to the barn @ 9 w/ a midmorning snack, then lunch, back to the barn w/ an afternoon snack, dinner @ 6 & then BACK out to the barn till about 9pm. Think we were done? Uh-huh. Back to the house for some book learning & hit the hay at 10 or 11. She worked our butts off but we learned a lot. During camp I asked myself why we worked so hard for this accomplishment when there isn’t the usual rewards (paychecks, acclaim) & by the end of the week I had spent so much time in the saddle I wasn’t sure I remembered how to drive the outfit home.
Will definitely be going back next year.
