Eye Infections and Injuries in Horses

Tuesday August 29, 2006
I went out a few mornings ago to find one of the ponies had a very puffy, weepy eye. She wanted to keep the eye closed but opened it because she very was suspicious of the camera. You can see the white film over her eye. I began treatment immediately because eye infections can very quickly get out of hand. Most eye infections are easily treated and heal very quickly. But left untreated what starts out as small irritation can quickly turn into an infection that can cause blindness.

Within 24 hours the pony's eye looked almost normal. Zas doesn't like her fly mask, and she fusses when I apply the ointment. But a little care now can prevent a big problem later. Eye Infections and Injuries in Horses will help you recognize eye problems and offers some ideas about what you can do until the veterinarian arrives.
