My Horse Doesn't Like to Be Groomed--What Can I Do?
Monday May 1, 2006
A reader left a comment last week that her horse didn't like being groomed. "I have a mare who hates that so much that today she bit me. What should I do?" Grooming should be a relaxing time for you and your horse. My own horses usually stand with their eyes half closed and their lips twitching. But what if your horse kicks, bites, nips, squirms or flinches? My Horse Doesn't Like to Be Groomed--What Can I Do? offers some tips and suggestions for taking the stress out of grooming.

Hello
I recently noticed my gelding was reacting negatively to his grooming. He is an Anglo-arab and as the article states, is thin skinned. He has always required soft brushes and a light touch. His recent behavior was out of the ordinary and I realized he had a fungus beginning to emerge on his skin. It has not turned into full blown scabs and I am treating it with a prescription shampoo from the vet. Some areas are defintely more sensitive than others. You may want to see if your horse could possibly have a problem evolving such as this. My horse is very well mannered, so his extreme change in reaction to grooming led me to look closer at the possibilities. Good luck and I hope your horse improves soon.
