I've been fortunate in that there have always been horses in my life. My mother had horses, and by the time I was five I had my first pony, although there is photographic evidence of me riding much earlier. If you're getting into horses a little later in life, chances are you're having to learn and prepare for things I've taken for granted. Although you never stop learning about horses and riding/driving, getting started can seem a bit overwhelming. There is so much to learn. Are you ready to bring that new horse home and care for it properly? Take this quiz and find out! Here's a hint to get a good score. Read the articles in Buying Your First Horse and Horse Care and this quiz will be a snap!

Liked the quiz! I’m only 15, but its been my dream for a long time to own a horse…
I hope your dream comes true!
Great quiz! 100% on all 3 of them!I am only 13, but I am a GREAT rider (or so i am told) and there is a horse boarding pasture right next door to me! Am I ready for my first horse, or should I wait a little longer?
Wow, that 13 year old girl seems like a real priss. I’m also 13, and I’ve been around horses since I was 2 mos old. I jump 4 1/2ft, but I would NEVER, EVER say that I was a “GREAT” rider. I’ve been told I was great, too, but that doesn’t mean you are ready for a horse. Never, ever, would I say that, because that would make me a snob.. I plan to earn a horse by the way I act and treat people and the way I do more than just ride. It takes maturity, understanding of all aspects of a horse. You have to love them and be able to sacrifice for them. You have to put them before yourself. I wish you all the best, Mollie, but maybe if you get a horse, you will be taught some humility. No one will ever like you if you act like a snob in the horse world, so get a grip on reality, please
I have also been wanting a horse all my life.. people just think its one of those “all little girls want ponies” phases. but its not! i have studied/spent time with horses for around 3-4 yrs, and next summer i might FINALLY get my own ♥ (I’m 13)
The first time I climbed a horse I was 45, and after 2 years I bought a 12 year old, supercool and friendly, absolutely calm Islandic Horse. I learned a lot because I have to, two lessons a week would not have brought me in this that wide. It was hard work and also expensive, because I had and still have, such a lot of lessons and seminarys. Now we are exactly 2 years together and it is wonderful! But I can see that for an elder person it is much different than to children or such people, who can do this their whole life long. It is an adventure and also self-encountering, a every-day challenge. But it is one of the best things of my life and best of all: He is well, healthy and relaxed! So I can recommend the mixture of elder horses and elder beginner!
I’m so glad you’re enjoying your Icy. But are we elderly riders? I prefer ‘mature’!
Great information. Thanks for the quiz. It’s important that people who get a horse knows what they are getting into; and understand the work and time involved with giving a horse proper care!
I am 14 and have been riding for 11 years. I think i am pretty good but i have more to learn. I am trying to convince my parents to buy me a horse and i started but now i have left it and am waiting for the right moment to bring it up again. I have found a good stable and have done all the work required and have a good knowlage of horse – do you think i am ready for my first horse?
Okay, well I’m 11 and technically don’t even own a horse yet (although I soon will-a bay OTTB mare named Hanna) and I know that it take longer than a half hour to take care of a horse. This quiz is retarded.
You should be able to do the very basics–a quick check, feed & water, hooves in about a half an hour. What I want people to realize is that it does take a commitment of time each day and every day to look after a horse. A half an hour is a minimum, and many people spend much more time.
Hi, I am 10 and have only been riding 2 years but I have taken loads of quizzen on horses, I am a member of the pony club I have walked, trotted, cantered, galloped and stayed on a horse bolting, also ridden bareback side saddle I’ve jumped hacked(by the way this was all alone), I can sit bucks, So, Ive fallen off twice and got straight back on and I’ve looked after my friends horse for 2 weeks! am I ready for a horse? and should I rescue one for a conpanion as well?
Hi, i love this quiz and i have a just turned 5 year old gelding. I didn’t know much about horses when i got him. But i suppose this quiz doesn’t really prove your capable of owning a horse, i’m only 12 years old and i can probably ride better than most adults i have jumped 155cm on my horse and he is a gypsy cross. Although this quiz says that you are ready for a horse you should really get one on loan first just as you may not be as committed as you think you are when you have to wake up really early before school to turn them out in the winter.
Hope this helped

hey i’m 13 to!!
me and my friend alanis have been riding over a year we both would like a horse so bad we ride in our own semi private lessons twice every 2 weeks
we both no the responsabilty we will takebin for owning a horse!!
are we ready??? and hiw can we convince our parents we are??? <3
Honestly! This quiz is not going to tell anyone if they are ready for a horse. Some of the questions aren’t even relevant or about horse care. Or correct, for that matter. I mean, seriously! Half an hour to take care of a horse? Yeah right!
