The Dangers of Icy Rivers and Pond Banks

Wednesday December 12, 2007
Forum member ShelbyBR posted this link to a news article about a horse that accidentally walked out on to the ice of a frozen pond in his pasture. He may have thought he was on solid ground, or thought the open area looked like a place to get a drink. Providing fresh water to horses is essential, even in the winter time. So it's important that all approaches to water sources be safe. Horses will drink more if the water is several degrees above freezing temperature. You'll want to have a water heater in your trough if there's a chance the water could ice over. Some people carry warmed water from the house to add to buckets. Snow and natural water sources shouldn't be relied on as horses can't eat enough snow to hydrate themselves and when the water is too cold they may not drink enough--especially when they may only be eating dry fodder over the winter months.
