Learning the Sideways Steps: Turn on the Forehand

Tuesday September 18, 2007
Now that Fredina's ulcers have healed and she is in much better condition than when I brought her home I have started working her lightly. The first thing I want her to do is understand leg aids.

As an ex-race horse she isn't really much more than 'whoa and go'. So to that end, I've been working on teaching her a turn on the forehand. This is just one way of teaching the turn on the forehand. Remember to go slow, make your cues clear, and practice in very short sessions. (Can you spot the problem with my hand position?) Several short sessions will be better than one long one. Some pupils will learn very quickly and some more slowly. And, the more skilled you become the faster your horse will learn.
