Horse Riding as Exercise

I came across an interesting article. Horse Riding - The Physical benefits, written by a physiotherapist, discusses the physical benefits of riding. The idea that horse back riding is much like steering a large couch is very prevalent. It's hard to convince some people that horseback riding involves doing more than just sitting and steering. But those of us who ride know that riding is a good exercise. I know that with my tricky back an easy hack at a walk keeps my back pain free. Trotting brings my heart rate up quite nicely. And riding a dressage test, or participating in a ride 'n' tie is just plain hard work that rivals anything I've ever done in a gym. I'm sure if you ride you've had similar experiences.

I agree – certainly when I hurt my back the only thing that gave me any relief was riding a horse at walk. Unfortunately gentle riding doesn’t do the trick for fitness – as you say you have to up the pace somewhat for longer periods to really get a good workout!

I would love to use the article you mentioned as a reference for a paper I am writing for one of my college classes. However the link does not work. Is there another one?
