My Horse Behaves Badly When Ridden Out Alone
Sunday July 30, 2006
A forum member recently bought a horse. All was going well until she tried to ride it alone on trail. The horse behaved very badly and she's very upset and unsure what to do. She's not alone--this is a very common problem. Two forum hosts, Cyniska and AppyT share their expertise and offer suggestions on how to solve this uncomfortable and potentially dangerous problem.

try borrowing a martingale to stop your horses head raising to high also try using a nose band that goes in front of the bit im not sure what its called but it stops the horse bitting things as he cant open his mouth enough also when your horse wants to go one way turn it the other way so he cant play up and take a whip to tap him on the sholder when he plays up this should make your horse reconise he is doing something he shouldnt and pat him on his sholder when he has done something right also try going into a sand school with him this will help you to get to know him and work on how to keep him in control but dont take him in everyday as it will make him bored try hacking and schooling him equally hope this helps x
First Off..after much experience with horses that do not want to go out alone..don’t! If your horse is comfortable riding with others..always ride with others. Do this for quite some time…6 months to a year. Then you might try going out short distances alone, and if all goes well, then increase it everytime you go out. If the horse still does not want to go out alone…personally, I wouldn’t push the envelope. Learn to do things in the arena so you can enjoy the horse alone. Arena exercises can be fun, and dressage is an option also, that will strenthen your horse’s body and mind. Learn to love the horse for what it can and wants to do..because believe me, after much experience getting frustrated and mad at my little horse for several years…it just wasen’t worth it…and she was a sweet little arena horse and I wish I had appreciated her more in that genre.
Try Rhythm Beads…they sure helped my horse focus on the bells rather than everything else. They also help me get in tune with my horse so we can become one…try them in the arena first to see how your horse will react to them…keep at it though, soon your horse will go anywhere with you and will be a calmer partner.
