How to Do an Emergency Stop

How do you stop a runaway horse? Maybe a hero (or heroine) will gallop up beside you, grab the reins and sweep you off to safety? I guess that only happens in movies. So a better idea would be to learn how to do an emergency stop. Just in case there are no heros or heroines at hand.
