What is a Chesnut?

No, it's not something you roast over an open fire. At least I hope not! Someone once asked me, with a very worried look on their face what that 'thing' was on the inside of the leg, just above the knee on her horse. I explained that the chestnut and the ergot are believed to be the same thing--just in different locations. What is the chestnut?
