Making Horse Hay

Sunday June 26, 2005
It seems the hottest weather of the summer heralds haying time. For horse owners without year-round pasture available, hay is the single most important fodder source. Horses require the best quality hay available.

This time of year farmers and horse owners cast anxious eyes to the sky and pray that rains hold off. Hay that is rained on looses value as the nutrients are washed away like tea leaches from tea bags. Hay baled before it is completely dry will mold, causing lung damaging dust. Hay acceptable for cattle feed may not be best for horses. So what kind of hay is best for your horse? Find out more from these frequently asked questions.
